Happy Birthday, Chase No Face!

May 1, 2019

Internet famous survivor-cat, “Chase No Face” turns 14 years old today! I’ve been friends with Chase’s family via the internet for the last eight years or so. Time flies and I wish many more years to that amazing beast.

How I met Chase

In 2011, I made a drawing of Chase No Face from a photograph posted on the popular blog BoingBoing.net. The original photo had been pixelated because some people were too freaked out by Chase's jarring appearance on the main page. You had to click through to the full article to see the full photo. I had been posting drawings of internet-famous animals on Laughing Squid almost everyday and when I saw Chase's unique face, I knew she was my next subject. Eventually, I came in contact with Chase's owner over email and sent her a print of my drawing. She then took a picture of Chase with the artwork and sent the photo to me. Since then, I've been getting nice Christmas cards, cookies, and correspondence from Chase and her family. So, out of mutual admiration I've become pen-pals with a cat. A very unique cat.

Garface

At some point, I started making a parody of Garfield starring Chase No Face and substituting Jon Arbuckle for myself. It didn't last all that long, but I had a good time drawing the strips and attempting to emulate the style of Garfield.

A Photoshoot with Chase No Face

In 2015, I met up with Chase No Face and her family in San Diego. I had organized a photoshoot with America's Finest Portraits photographer Jeff Christensen before the meet-up and it really made for a memorable trip. Chase is one of the most relaxed cat's I've ever met and, as it turns out, highly photogenic.
